WASHINGTON (AP) -Center Brendan Haywood has left the Washington Wizards' exhibition game against the Dallas Mavericks with a sprained right ankle.

The Wizards said he would not return to Friday night's game.

Haywood tumbled to the court and clutched his right ankle after being fouled by Drew Gooden about 2 1/2 minutes into the game. Haywood was helped up by teammates and stayed in the game, playing for another 5 1/2 minutes.

WASHINGTON (AP) -Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle isn't sure when swingman Josh Howard will be able to play after offseason surgery on his left ankle.

Asked Friday whether Howard could miss the start of the regular season, Carlisle replied: ``Stay tuned.''

``Giving a timetable was probably a mistake. We have to play this by ear,'' Carlisle said. ``I'll probably announce it the day he is going to play - whether that is in two weeks or a month or a month and a half.''
